eToro Crypto Copy Trading Review

eToro popularised copy trading long before crypto exchanges adopted it. Its CopyTrader works differently from exchange copy products — here is how, and whether it suits crypto copiers.

Our verdict

The veteran of social trading, with a clear CopyTrader model, no profit share charged to copiers and multi-asset portfolios. Well suited to longer-term, diversified copying; less suited to followers who want leveraged crypto derivatives or the deepest crypto order books.

CopyTrader in a nutshell

eToro is a multi-asset investment platform with a social network built in. Its CopyTrader feature lets you choose an investor and allocate an amount; from then on, eToro replicates their trades in your account proportionally. If an investor holds a mix of crypto, stocks and ETFs, your copy holds the same mix — subject to the assets eToro offers where you live.

This differs from exchange copy trading in two important ways. First, you copy a whole portfolio, not just leveraged futures positions on one exchange. Second, eToro does not take a profit share from you for the investor; instead, it pays popular investors through its own Popular Investor program.

eToro's strength is portfolio-style copying, where crypto is one part of a broader mix.

Crypto on eToro: what to know

  • Availability varies. The list of cryptoassets — and whether crypto can be copied at all — differs by country and regulatory entity. eToro's US offering in particular has changed over time.
  • Fees and spreads. Crypto trades on eToro carry fees and spreads that can be higher than on large crypto exchanges. Check the current fee page.
  • Leverage. eToro is not designed for high-leverage crypto derivatives copying in the way exchanges are, and retail leverage on crypto is restricted in many regions.
Risk score

eToro shows a risk score for investors based on the volatility of their portfolio. It is a helpful filter, but like any single number, it should be read together with drawdown history and asset mix.

Who eToro suits

Good fit

  • Long-term investors wanting diversified copies
  • People who prefer a regulated, multi-asset platform
  • Beginners who value a simple interface

Less ideal

  • Followers wanting leveraged crypto futures copying
  • Very cost-sensitive active traders
  • Users in regions where crypto copy is unavailable

Compared with crypto exchanges such as Binance or Bitget, eToro is slower-paced and broader. Compared with Zignaly, it uses a different payout model and custody structure. For the full picture, see our platform comparison.

Choosing an investor to copy on eToro

eToro's discovery tools are built for longer-term copying. Useful filters and checks:

CheckWhat to look for
Risk scoreA level consistent with your tolerance, stable over time
Track recordSeveral years where available, through up and down markets
Portfolio mixHow much is crypto vs other assets — and whether that suits you
Maximum drawdownA decline you could live with
Copier trendSteady growth rather than sudden spikes

Copying open trades: yes or no?

When you start a copy, eToro lets you choose whether to also copy the investor's currently open positions. Copying them gives you the investor's full current portfolio immediately, but at today's prices — which may be much higher or lower than their entries. Not copying them means you only follow new trades, so your portfolio will differ from theirs until they rebalance. Many long-term copiers choose to copy open trades for portfolio-style investors and skip them for more active traders.

eToro and crypto volatility

An eToro investor with a mixed portfolio may hold crypto alongside stocks and ETFs, which can soften crypto's volatility. If you specifically want crypto exposure, check the share of crypto in each investor's portfolio — a "crypto investor" with mostly equities will not give you the exposure you expect, and a 100% crypto portfolio will be as volatile as the market itself.

Security and scam awareness

eToro's popularity makes it a frequent target for impersonation. Use the official app, enable two-step verification, and be wary of "eToro account managers" contacting you on social media or messaging apps. On eToro you copy investors from within your own account; nobody needs your password or a transfer to a personal wallet.

Check before you deposit

Copy trading features, profit share rules, minimums and regional availability change frequently. We summarise public information; always confirm the current terms on eToro's official website and read its risk disclosures. Leveraged trading carries a high risk of loss.

Frequently asked questions

How does eToro copy trading work for crypto?

With CopyTrader you choose an investor and an amount; eToro then replicates their trades in proportion to your investment. If they hold crypto, you hold crypto in the same proportions, subject to what eToro offers in your country.

What is the minimum to copy on eToro?

eToro has historically required a minimum of $200 to copy a trader. Minimums can change, so check eToro's current terms.

Does eToro charge fees for copy trading?

eToro does not charge copiers a separate profit share or management fee for CopyTrader. Normal eToro fees and spreads on the underlying trades still apply, including crypto fees.

Can I copy crypto traders on eToro in the US?

eToro's US offering is more limited than elsewhere and has changed over time. Check which assets and copy features are available for your state.

What is the eToro Popular Investor program?

It is eToro's programme that pays qualifying investors who are copied by others. Payments come from eToro rather than as a profit share from copiers.

How many traders can I copy on eToro?

eToro has historically allowed copying many investors at the same time, with a minimum amount per copy. Check eToro's current limits, and remember that copying many investors with similar portfolios does not add much diversification.

Can I copy only the crypto part of an investor's portfolio?

No. CopyTrader copies the investor's portfolio as a whole, in proportion to your copy amount. If you want pure crypto exposure, choose investors whose portfolios are mostly crypto.

Does eToro offer a demo account for copy trading?

eToro has offered a virtual portfolio for practice. You can also try copy settings risk-free in our simulator before copying for real.
